About Antigua & Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda is an award-winning tourism destination, rated among the best in the world. Antigua alone has over 365 beaches and a visitor can spend a year, visiting a different one every day. The coastal waters are crystal clear and the beaches are mainly sandy white, except for our famous pink sand beaches of Barbuda. Water sports operators offer a variety of activities, including fishing, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, diving, and yacht cruises
The tropical islands of Antigua and Barbuda are located in the heart of the Caribbean about a thousand miles to the east of Jamaica and half that distance from Trinidad on the coast of South America. We are at 17- N latitude, about the same as the Cape Verde Islands and Bombay and 61- W longitude. The country was colonised by the British in 1632 and, apart from a six-month period of French occupation, it remained British until its independence in 1981. The country decided to join the Commonwealth of Nations (an organisation of Britain and its former colonies) and chose to retain Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State. English is the spoken and written language of the country, which is politically stable adhering to democracy and the rule of law. The rights of its citizens and its visitors are protected by the Constitution.
Our fine cuisine is an exciting blend of national and international dishes served with a Caribbean flair and it reflects the islands’ international status. Over 100 restaurants can be found in Antigua offering delicious cuisine from exotic, local dishes to West Indian, Italian, French, Chinese, and Swiss-German fare. Our Sister Island is famous for impeccably-fresh seafood. An opportunity to dine in local homes and village shops in Barbuda makes the visitor experience colourful and authentic, in keeping with the island’s natural surroundings.
We offer various historic walking tours through St. John’s City and the UNESCO World Heritage Site in English Harbour, and off-road island safaris are a fascinating experience. A horse-back ride, or a zip through the rainforest are just some of the other ways to discover the destination. Barbuda boasts the largest breeding and nesting colony of the Magnificent Frigate Bird in the world.
Whatever your preference in nature and palette, Antigua and Barbuda IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!
